RESILIENCE IN CULTURE COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTS (RiCE)™

Why RiCE™ exists

RiCE™ was created to enhance and modernise travel safety and awareness training for people working and travelling overseas. The structure has been deliberately formed as a progressive programme that takes people on a journey — one that covers both fragile environments and hostile environments, rather than treating either in isolation.

After years of development and from gaining experience and understanding across different settings, the course came to draw on ISO 31030:2021 and to acknowledge the input of different sectors so that it offers a more comprehensive view. This is contextual training - built to be realistic to modern threats, not to a template written for a different era.

WHAT IS A COMPLEX ENVIRONMENT.....

RiCE™ PROGRAMME - Understanding the environment is key to knowing the landscape and anticipating what to expect. This is essential reading for anyone operating in culture complex environments.

Built on ISO 31030:2021

RiCE™ takes its lead from ISO 31030:2021, the international Travel Risk Management guidance for organisations. Published in 2021, it gives organisations a structured approach to managing the risks of work-related travel, covering policy, programme development, threat and hazard identification, risk assessment, and prevention and mitigation.

The learning process has shown us that, alongside Safety and Security, there must be room for Health, Safeguarding and Culture - put on an equal footing rather than treated as afterthoughts. Drawing on this framework lets RiCE™ safeguard the health and security of travellers while building duty of care and social responsibility into the course itself.

A Layered Programme

The strength of the course is its ability to layer and encompass other courses that focus specifically on fragile and hostile environments. RiCE™ frames those courses while extending responsibility into the broader nuances that genuinely enhance personal safety and security.

It is layered so that content extends by overlapping and facilitating micro-immersive scenarios. Courses that address hostile environments in isolation, or fragile environments in isolation, leave gaps and those gaps do not create the natural bridging of awareness which is needed across different events and environments. RiCE™ builds that bridge.

OWNERSHIP AND MISSION

RiCE™ trade-mark registered - grows to replace the traditional courses while maintaining its alignment with ISO 31030:2021 guidance. It was designed by Rocky Road Resilience, who retain ownership of the programme.

Our mission is to develop understanding across different sectors. Organisations need to adapt, and it is the company’s hope that the opportunity will be given for this course to emerge, evolving into a true Complex Environment Awareness Course.

RiCE™ modernises travel safety and awareness training into a single progressive journey, bridging fragile and hostile environments, layering and encompassing the courses that came before, and underpinned by ISO 31030:2021 so that Health, Safeguarding and Culture sit alongside Safety and Security, with duty of care running through everything we do.

Traditional foundations, modernised. - We keep every life-saving fundamental a credible SAFE course must cover, then pressure-test it against today's threats - digital surveillance, civil unrest, drone awareness and mental resilience, so nothing is taught simply because it always has been.

01

The wider threat landscape. - RiCE™ broadens the SAFE understanding beyond fragile environments and hostile events to the realities of complex deployments and activities, helping participants recognise and manage the full range of risks they will actually encounter.

02

Never online. - This is an awareness course, we have a responsibility to make sure learning is taking place in context. An online version will only inform, it does not allow participants to become intrinsically aware - it would be irresponsible for us, or anyone, to run or accept anything other than face-to-face delivery. We combine classroom learning with micro-immersive scenario-based exercises and refuse to reduce life-saving training to a "tick-box" activity.

03

Built on ISO 31030:2021. By taking a lead from the international Travel Risk Management guidance document, we place Health, Safeguarding and Culture on an equal footing with Safety and Security, building duty of care and social responsibility into the DNA of our courses.

04

Context and Wellbeing. - Scenarios are delivered within controlled, professionally risk-assessed conditions. Scenarios are micro-immersive to maximise learning and reduce exposure, we are not a Hollywood production. Each participant is supported to engage within their own physical and emotional limits.

05

Our Promise: In an unregulated market, we pride ourselves on being transparent about what our certificates represent, their validity period and when you should consider refreshing your knowledge. We avoid claiming the title of "expert" in the diverse field of travel risk, expertise in all areas is impossible. Instead, our mission is to lay a strong foundation through thoughtfully designed courses. Above all, we are teachers, not trainers. We facilitate a student-centred approach, learning from our participants’ experiences and perspectives and continuously testing these insights against our course framework, robust research, and the experience of our team and trusted affiliates.
